I’ve encountered time and time again, how the cultural gap between the US and Japan creates unnecessary tension and misunderstanding between the various staff and teams involved across the Pacific. You can see a macrocosm of this in the US-Japan diplomatic relations. Using my skills in active listening and interpretation/translation, and my knowledge of both cultures, I have saved many dead-end situations that required someone like me who has the brains of both a Japanese person and an American, in one body.
In most cases, I can see where both sides are coming from, and begin communicating on behalf of both sides, without putting “me” in between. I can “channel” both sides as a neutral facilitator, and see both sides naturally mediate as they see things more clearly.
American side and Japanese side often do not have the same expectations, and often times, they do not have the capacity to communicate at a level that allows them to come to an alignment or an agreement. Often times, what is tacitly understood and unspoken in Japan, must be spoken loudly in America. What is so obvious to Americans, may not be so obvious to the Japanese.
Most “upsets/issues” come from either an unmet expectation or something that is un-communicated/un-noticed.
I can communicate at the same level in both languages and cultures, and create a rapid resolution of upsets on both sides involved.
Having spent my formative years in both Japan and US, and having most of my family still living in Japan, gives me a perspective unlike any other bi-cultural, bi-lingual Japanese/American staff/consultant/interpreter you may have encountered.
I am not your ordinary Kikoku-shijo (帰国子女, Japanese ex-pats coming back to Japan from abroad), who often are usually good in only one language/culture, and weak in the other.
I’ve lived in the US for over 20 years (since 11 yrs old), but my parents are in Japan and I go there often enough to stay in tune with what’s happening over there (which is now mostly observable online anyhow). I attended Japanese schools on Saturdays back when we lived in Dallas, and I went to two years of high-school in Tokyo and graduated there, before coming to NY on my own. I have two passports. I am completely bilingual in both languages – and read voraciously in both.
